Mistakes We Make in Storing Fresh Fruit and Vegetables
Summer is the best time of the year for fruit and vegetables. There are so many of them and we simply cannot resist. Who doesn’t want to eat a watermelon? Also, we like fruit based drink, so we drink them all the time. Summer is the time of the year when the population increases the consumption of fruits and vegetables. But, many of us make certain mistakes in storing it. This problem starts when we come from the grocery shop. We just put fruit and vegetables into a refrigerator. After a few days, it starts to rot.
• The first mistake we make is when we wash everything before we put it in a refrigerator. When wet, fruit and vegetables are the best environment for bacteria growth. The solution is simple. Don’t wash fruit and vegetables when you are storing it. Do this when you are ready to eat or cook it.
• We all wrap or store fruits and vegetables in an airtight plastic bag. Again, this is a mistake. Fruit and vegetables need space, so it can breathe. Poke holes in plastic bags or use mesh bags. Don’t forget to give enough space to your fruit and vegetables.
• Don’t store fruits and vegetables in the same section. Try to separate them. Many people make this mistake, because they want to have well-organized refrigerator. Fruit emit ethylene gas, so it can spread on the products around the refrigerator section. For example, bananas will become ‘’black’’ very fast. The solution is to wrap them in a plastic wrap. You will be able to store them for much longer.
