What foods contain lutein?

Lutein is one of the two carotenoids that are richly found in the vegetables and fruits. It helps in filtering light from sunlight by absorbing blue light from the sun. The medical use of the lutein is to protect eyes from any sort of problem like retinitis pigmentosa, macular degeneration, and cataracts. Lutein is also available in the market in an artificial form in multivitamins, but its amount is only 0.25 mg per tablet. Lutein helps in hydrating the body and promoting elasticity of the skin.  As well, because of its antioxidant properties, lutein can aid in the prevention of heart disease by reducing plaque build-up in the arteries. The following are the foods that are excellent sources of lutein:

  • Kale
  • Broccoli
  • Orange pepper
  • Corn
  • Spinach
  • Grapes
  • Kiwi fruit
  • Squash
  • Eggs
  • Green beans
  • Carrots
  • Zucchini and many others.

All these food products are easily available in the market. You can use these foods raw in salads or cook them well before eating them.

In most of the supplements, marigold flowers are used as the lutein source. All the supplements with lutein can be purchased over the counter without doctor’s prescription. Generally doctors will recommend people to just eat more of the foods that are high in lutein in addition to lutein supplements.
